Savannah has seen an explosion of confections recently. From Rise Biscuits & Donuts to Le Macaron, you can take your pick all over the city. Duck Donuts adds to the mix. A little donut shop from Duck, North Carolina is now franchising and expanding along the east coast. I swung by for a preview of the location at 7400 Abercorn Street, #702 Savannah, Georgia 31406.
The company was founded by a family seeking hot, delicious donuts in their small town. After testing out recipes, they developed a system that takes your freshly fried donut directly to be coated, topped, and drizzled. You first select the number of donuts that you want then go to town creating your own or pick from their preselected recipes. For someone like me, I prefer to choose from the flavors provided. It makes deciding easier. As you can see below, there’s so much to choose from.
Create your dozen using the order form and pay at the register. From there, the donuts get dropped into hot oil rolling down a conveyor until the golden beauties drop into a bin. The donut maker then places them into a box then delivers it to the donut toppers. They then coat it with anything from chocolate to glazed to blueberry, top it with chopped bacon to shredded coconut, then drizzle it with hot fudge to salted caramel to marshmallow.
In a matter of minutes, you can walk out with your own hot, customized donuts. You can expect a cakey dough, light, and a hint of vanilla. It’s not Krispy Kreme (for a Southerner like me, that is the gold standard). However, my boyfriend absolutely LOVED them. He prefers a donut with a little weight, slightly crispy on the outside, and light enough that you don’t feel sick after just one. We will definitely be back for more. These donuts are perfect for tea or coffee plus the Quack Gives Back donates proceeds to a local non-profit.
