Low Country Pie Festival Recap

The Low Country Pie Festival Recap Lutheran Services of Georgia

“Song, song of the South…

Sweet potato pie and I shut my mouth!”

Nope, mouths were indeed open and quite full Sunday at the first annual Low Country Pie Festival. Emmett Park was lined with dozens of the Low Country’s best hometown pies. This was not a typical and expected festival fare: it was instead a taste of the sweet South’s most celebrated desserts, all gathered in one place: a foodie’s dream. There to help us eliminate the gluttoned guilt was the Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG), the Savannah Food Truck Festival and their generous sponsors.

Our editor, Justice Dilworth, was a judge for the Pie Bake Off. She and the rest of the pie police tasted over twenty pies!  All of our favorite bakeries and restaurants were present with their takes on the tradition pie favorites. Other nominees instead pointed us with special glee towards their own creations. Speaking of which is The Pie Guy, who took the cake… er, pie. His winning bean pie featured a tasty rendition of puréed refried beans on pie crust. We were quite impressed!

I’ve also got to give major props to winners of the Pie Eating Contest, who wolfed down some truly massive amounts of pie in in what felt like 3.14 seconds (yeah, went there). Just watching was enough to give you a stomach ache, but I could certainly appreciate the determination!

One of the day’s highlights was the mystery celebrity reveal, who was welcomed with a few pie creams to the face. Savannah Bananas ringleader, Jesse Cole, was an excellent sport! He was pied three glorious times with you guessed it – banana pie.

Patrons enjoyed unique, specialty food truck eats on behalf of the Savannah Food Truck Festival as they strolled through the Emmmet Park inhaling delicious smells that ranged from Hawaiian pork and brocolli tacos from Dark Shark – Taco Attack to Caribbean Chicken with Sriracha Aioli sandwiches from PKCafeTruck.

All proceeds made Sunday go to benefit the coastal Lutheran Services of Georgia in Savannah – the second largest site to their main headquarters in Atlanta. Their services provide foster care, adoption, disability services and family intervention. Learn more about them and see why they are such a great organization who were honored to provide media coverage for!
